Description
Steel nozzle
The high steel content contained in the Steelfill material causes a very abrasive effect on the normal brass nozzle. It is not as extreme as the XT-CF20, but it may affect the print quality after printing. After a weight of about 1.5 kg, the effects of the material on the printing quality is visible.
Therefore we recommend you to use a hardened nozzle.
Heated building board
Steelfill can easily be printed on a cool platform with blue tape or a building board spray. If your 3D printer has a heated building board, we recommend a printing temperature of approximately 50 °C.
Layer height
For the first test prints, we recommend using a layer height of between 0.2 to 0.27 mm when printing with 0.4 mm nozzle.
In general, a good amount of flow is achieved with the default settings, to prevent the hot-end from clogging.
If you use lower layer heights, reduce either the printing speed or the temperature. Furthermore, the flow also need to be adjusted.
Printing temperature
Steelfill to Bronzefill in its performance. For most devices, the standard PLA temperature is a good starting point.
Cooling
Steelfill is very effective in cooling during the printing process. Use the cooling only if the model really requires it. (Many details, sharp corners, etc.).
Less cooling means better adhesion. Ideally, it is recommended to start with a 50% cooling capacity.
Retract
Before setting the values for the retract, ensure that the temperature and speed are optimal.
PLA retract values are a good starting point for most printers. However, one can expect slightly higher rates in order to achieve the best results.
Additional Information
TIP! Depending on the set-up, 3D printers and slicer software, it may be the case that colorFabb metal filaments require more flow compared to normal PLA.
TIP! If you polish and sand the printed parts, the metal particles will take on a glossy sheen.
Start with a grain size of 120-180 to ensure that the the printed lines (layers) disappear. Use finer grains towards the end of the finishing process and complete the process with a cloth for polishing towards the end.
Only for advanced users.
