Yes it should work quite well but the left version might be better so the thumbscrew faces to the front of the printer. After that the Vref would need to be decreased and a change in esteps made but that's it.

The orientation only depends on where it will be attached. Maybe your printer has another component that would block the lever? If you're using a community created printable mount then again part this mount might block a necessary part of the extruder. Just check the design to find out. Generally though, the "right" version is the standard one and is most commonly used.
